December 16, 1931 ~ April 14, 2024 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Robert Mion, Sr. Obituary

It is with deepest sadness that we announce the peaceful passing on April 14, 2024 of Robert L. Mion Sr. of Binghamton, NY surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years Barbara. Also predeceasing him his son, Michael; his granddaughter, Erin Phelps; and his son-in-law, Robert Schaffer. He is survived by his children Regina Schaffer (Craig Finch), Carol Mion, Annette (Dale) Phelps, and Robert (Angela) Mion Jr.  Grandchildren: Michael (Maria) Schaffer, Marie (Adam) Ziac, Matthew (Kayleigh) Schaffer, Bryon (Jenn) Phelps, Lindsay Mion, Nick Mion, Kacee (Mitch) Holland and Megan Mion. Great grandchildren: Tyler, Mila, Wade, Brooks, Madeline, Liv, Lorenzo, James, Vincent, Nick, and Angelo. Special baby brother, Lino Mion, Surprise, AZ.  Sister-and-brothers-in-laws Arlene and Joseph Bigart and Michael Gazdik. Special sister-in-law: Judy Gazdik. Many nieces, nephews and cousins and special cousin Orlando Pigleiavento, Albany.

In addition to being a devoted, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather he was devoted to his faith his friends and his community. He graduated from North High School then he served in the US Air Force during the Korean War achieving the rank of Staff Seargent. He then worked alongside his father as a mason, being one of only five tile setters able to do tile ceilings in Broome County.  Bob served as President of the Bricklayers Local 42 NY and sat on the Board of Trustees for many years.  He became an IMTEF Instructor until his retirement in 1993.  In 2022 he received an International BAC Service award.  He continued to be active in the apprenticeship and training programs until his death.   
He also worked at Singer Link in Hillcrest from 1977 to 1990.
He sat as President of the C and H Hunting Club for two terms and remained an active member for many years.  He was past Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus Council 206 on the South Side.
He was active with Boy Scout Troop 199 and coached Hillcrest Little League for many years.  He was instrumental in planning and development of the Angel of Hope project at Port Dick Park, even laying some of the bricks and the angel at the center.
He was an avid golfer, being a part of more than one league!  He had many friends and lots of stories from his time on the links.  He loved the game until the end.  
His afternoon "rides" to the Sons of Italy on Carroll Street brought him much joy. 
Bob took care of so many during his life, especially his wife Barbara and his parents Susie and Lino Mion.   Toward the end, so many helped take care of him.  A special thank you to his son Bob and his wife Angie for providing a loving home for him the last few years, Carol for providing the respite home for him.  Megan and Aunt Judy for the nursing care he needed.  Dr. Ramanujan and his staff for his special care and attention at the end.
The family will receive friends on Friday, April 19, 2024 from 4pm to 6pm at the THOMAS J. SHEA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 137 Robinson Street, Binghamton, NY 13904.  A Funeral Mass will be held at 11am on Saturday, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Binghamton.  Burial will follow with Military Honors in Chenango Valley Cemetery.  

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 37 Fayette St, Binghamton, NY 13901 or The Sons of Italy Men’s Lodge, 62 Carroll St, Binghamton, NY 13901.  Arrangements are in the care of Albert J. DeMarco.
