Malvern J. Harpell, Jr., of Kirkwood, NY passed away on November 21, 2018. He was born to Malvern J. Harpell and Josephine Harpell in Flushing, NY on September 25, 1928. Mal lived an honorable and distinguished life of service as a former U.S. Marine from 1946-48, a NYS Trooper from 1950-70, a Kirkwood Town Justice from 1970-82 and also served the town through the Youth Commission and Planning Board of Appeals. He worked for the U.S. Postal service from 1975-90 and was assigned the title of Special Deputy Corrections for the Sheriff's Department in 1982. In 1981 Mal earned his Bachelor of Science degree in American History. He was also a Charter Member, former Secretary and President of the Kirkwood Lions Club. "Booka" was an avid reader and a lifelong fan of the N.Y. Giants and Knicks. He enjoyed his time working at and supporting the family built Five Mile Point Speedway. He is pre-deceased by his parents, four sisters and their spouses and his daughter in-law Mary Anne Foley Harpell as well as his extended family. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Patricia, daughter of the late Irving L. and Anna M. Heath of Kirkwood, his daughter Holly J. and (Rich) Heiser of Maryland, his son Malvern J. III of Florida, his son Daniel of Kirkwood and son Andrew of Kirkwood. He is also survived by his beloved grandsons Tyler, Tanner and Tucker from Kirkwood and Ethan from Maryland. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 26, 2018 from 3pm until 6pm at the THOMAS J. SHEA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 137 Robinson St., Binghamton, NY 13904. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday at 10am at St. Mary's Church in Kirkwood. Burial will follow with Military Honors in Chenango Valley Cemetery.
