Albert J. Zemanick, 90, of Binghamton, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 27th at Wilson Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Al is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Linda (Weslar) Zemanick, and his loving children: Mary (John) Savelli, Patty (John) Williams, Jim (Jane Kinneary), Louise (Steve) Steinmetz, John (Tiffany Rubenstein), and Amy (Leif) Aubrey. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to 18 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life.
Al was born on September 8, 1935, in Lehman, Pennsylvania, to Albert J. Zemanick, Sr. and Eleanore (Evans) Zemanick. When he was still quite young his family moved to Binghamton and established their homestead on Windy Hill. Al and his siblings, Betty Seniw, Robert (Ellen) Zemanick, and Cathy (Norman) Shadduck, formed close bonds on that beautiful hillside that he carried with him throughout his life. He is also survived by his brother-in-law John (Karen) Weslar.
He graduated from Binghamton North High School, where his creativity and talent were recognized with a poetry award for his piece titled “Farm Life.” Following graduation, Al proudly served his country in the Army National Guard and was honored as Soldier of the Year, a reflection of his dedication, integrity, and strong character.
Al went on to enjoy a long and successful career at IBM spanning nearly 40 years, retiring at the age of 57. In his retirement, he found his greatest happiness in the simple and meaningful moments—spending time with his family, hiking, fishing, and enjoying time on Cork Island and in Florida at Al and Linda’s beloved “Silver Bullet” Airstream. These moments created memories that his family will hold close forever.
Affectionately known as “Pop” by his grandchildren, Al had a warm heart, and a wonderful sense of humor. He especially loved giving tractor rides, a tradition that brought endless laughter, joy, and unforgettable memories to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Some of his lifelong friends included: “The Hunting Gang” Gary Puzo, Bill Becker, Dick and Kenny Gaskill, Jim Cobb, Butch Zemanick, and Charlie Hurtgam. Also, close family friends Jade and Erik Cohen.
Albert will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his kindness, gentle nature, unwavering love for his family, and his famous Manhattans. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
A wake will be held on Thursday, April 30th from 5:00–7:00 PM at St. Paul’s Church, 282 Chenango Street, Binghamton, NY 13901. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 1st also at St. Paul’s Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Al’s memory. We also like to extend a special thank you to the CV-ICU staff at Wilson Hospital and Dr. John Miller for their exceptional care.
