It is with great sorrow the Smach family announces the passing of our kind, brave, strong, and unimaginably caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend Dorothy Ann (Vaughan) Smach, of Palm Harbor, Florida, on May 7, 2023 (13 days short of her 97th birthday).
A secret that Dorothy fiercely protected her entire adult life, she was born May 20, 1926, to Maurice and Margaret Vaughan in Binghamton, New York, where she lived, married, and successfully raised four children of her own. Being one of nine siblings, family always surrounded her. She was fearless and independent, yet sensitive and incredibly caring and compassionate, especially to her large extended family who she always prioritized with great care and love. She was strong-willed and opinionated, but those traits defined who she was. Her strength undoubtedly helped her deal with life’s challenges, such as growing up in the great depression.
She is survived by her children Mary Margaret Smach, James (Christina) Smach, Thomas (Linda) Smach, and Gregory Smach and grandsons Ryan (Mackenzie) Smach, Taylor Smach and Kevin Smach. Dorothy is predeceased by her loving husband Cyril Smach, her parents, Maurice and Margaret Vaughan, and siblings John (Edith) Vaughan, Margaret (Carol) Casey, Daniel (Jayne) Vaughan, Mary (William) Killean, Maurice (Florence) Vaughan, Elinore (Joseph) Foley, Robert Vaughan (“Uncle Bob”), and Edward (Mill) McNamara. She had many nieces and nephews that she loved very much.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul’s Church, Binghamton, New York on May 20, 2023. Visitation will be at St. Paul’s at 9:00 am with the funeral mass immediately following at 10:00 am, and a graveside service at Cavalry Cemetery in Johnson City with a luncheon to follow.
