Dr. Jared Smythe Obituary

Jared Adam Smythe (36) of Windsor, NY and formally of Massena, NY died peacefully on October 6, 2024 at Binghamton General Hospital after a 2 ½ year battle with cancer, with his loving wife, Karen, by his side.

Jared is survived by his wife, Karen Howland-Smythe and children: daughter, Alexis Lynn Smythe and infant son Hunter Jared Smythe.  Jared is also survived by his parents, Geoffrey and Jane (Burnell) Smythe of Massena; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Scott and Carol Howland, of Windsor; brother-in-law Christopher (Jelyn) Howland, of Johnson City; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Jared was born on August 12, 1988 in Massena, NY.  Jared graduated from Massena Central High School, SUNY Plattsburgh, and then New York Chiropractic College where he earned his Doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine and a Masters in Applied Clinical Nutrition.  After graduation, Jared worked at Owego Chiropractic, Owego, NY with Dr.  Joseph Loverro.  Jared loved chiropractic medicine and the ability to help people.

Jared enjoyed carp fishing and duck hunting on the St. Lawrence River.  It was at a fishing tournament on the St. Lawrence River where Jared met Karen, which he often referred to as one of his happiest memories.  Jared and Karen have been together for over 15 years since that initial fishing tournament.   Jared also played hockey in high school and college and continued to play hockey on local teams after graduation.  Jared was a huge fan of the Boston Bruins and had looked forward to watching the playoffs every year.

Most importantly, Jared was a wonderful father and loved his children very dearly.  He always enjoyed spending time with his daughter, Alexis.  He had dreams of teaching his children to play hockey, to fish, and to take them to Bruins games. Unfortunately, Jared was called to Heaven before he got to do these things and to enjoy holding his baby boy, Hunter.

Jared went on many adventures with his wife, Karen, and they had lived on the Island of St. Kitts, in Baton Rouge, Louisianna, and in Apalachin, NY before moving to Windsor, NY to raise their children.  They enjoyed traveling together, competing in fishing tournaments, vacationing on the St. Lawrence River, and snuggling with their large family of furry pets.  Jared especially loved his dog, Odin, whom he was teaching to be his hunting dog.

Jared’s family, friends, and co-workers will miss him dearly.   There will be calling hours from 5 -7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at the Thomas J.  Shea Funeral Home, Inc., 137 Robinson St. Binghamton. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10am on Thursday, October 10, 2024 at St. Mary's Church in Kirkwood. Burial will be private.
