Gloria Allen Obituary

Gloria Assunta* Maria (DiLascia) Allen passed away peacefully on Friday, January 1, 2021 at the UHS General Hospital in Binghamton, NY after a short illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl J. Allen with whom she was married to for 55 years;  her parents, Nobile (Jack) DiLascia and Henrietta (Cacialli) DiLascia; and by her brothers, Francis A. DiLascia and Louis N. DiLascia. She is survived by her brother, Alfred T. DiLascia of MA; and nephew Jack DiLascia of Binghamton, Linda Marbaker; who was like a daughter to Gloria, nephews David Wheeler of CA, and Jimmy Evans of Virginia; and niece Susan Woodman of MA and her husband Dan; and several other nieces and nephews...and at least 2 great, great, grand nieces!

*Assunta means the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven.

Gloria lived alone in her later years, and the family is very thankful to all the neighbors on Allendale Road in Binghamton who helped Gloria a great deal in this stage of her life; and also for the tremendous assistance given to her by Evie Spry, a good friend of Gloria.

In her employment career she had a brief experience of being one of the famed dancing "Rockettes", entertaining at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City. She later worked as a secretary at the Security Mutual Insurance Company in Binghamton, and then as a secretary and aid to former New York State Senator, Warren M. Anderson, who became the President, and Majority Leader, of the State Senate. She also worked for a time in the well known family business in Binghamton, DiLascia's Bakery, with the catchy motto, "If it's DiLascia's, it's Delicious!"

Gloria had the personality of her mother, Henrietta DiLascia, who was a very warm and loving person, friendly to all, and seldom, if ever, said a bad word about anybody. She was also a very giving person. She grew up like many of the Italian families of Binghamton by attending Saint Mary of the Assumption Church in Binghamton, that was commonly referred to as "St. Mary's Italian Church". When she was a little girl she spoke and wrote Italian fluently and retained this all throughout her life. Her Italian grandparents taught her well. In fact, she could hardly speak English before she started Kindergarten and had to learn quickly!  She passed away at 94 years of age and lived a good and full life. Gloria was a good person.

The family will receive friends at the Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home, 137 Robinson Street in Binghamton on Wednesday, January 6, from 4 to 6 PM.
