Irene Citar passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at the age of 97 surrounded by her devoted niece, her best friend, and her beloved aides. She was born on the youngest child of immigrants from Humana, which is in the eastern part of present day Slovakia and was predeceased by all eleven siblings and the love of her life, Stanley. She is survived by a loving and devoted niece, Dr. P. Sheehan McHugh and her best friend and adopted sister, Debbie Buchinsky. Also several nieces and nephews.
Irene was a lifelong resident of the first ward and member of St. Michael’s Church. She prayed daily for all her family and friends and loved and thoroughly enjoyed the surprise gifts and meals she would receive from her church community during the holidays. Irene initially worked at Endicott Johnson , then she went to work for General Electric in the payroll department and retired from there after many decades of service. When she was younger Irene enjoyed her trips to Florida, Hawaii and Amagansette, always in search of a beach to get that perfect tan. She also enjoyed wearing big fancy hats to church and driving big cars. To this day she loved riding in her Lincoln Towncar. To keep her mind sharp Irene worked all the puzzles in the daily newspaper up until a year ago when her eyesight really started to fail. She loved doing the two crosswords, the jumbles, crypto-quotes, word search and scrambles as well.
I want to send a very special thank you to Debbie Buchinsky for truly being Irene’s best friend and assisting in her care and comfort in such a devoted and loving way over the years. An additional thank you goes out to Barry who fixed anything that went wrong in the house, and Lydia, Ohana, Cat, Innessa, and Michelle for their loving care of my aunt.
Private Services were conducted by Fr. James Dutko and the Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home, Inc.
