John Francis Donahue

After a long illness and with his loving family by his side, our beloved John F. Donahue, 68 of Binghamton, was called home to be with the Lord on September 6, 2024. John retired from Broome Developmental Center after over 20 years of service. He also worked at Broome County Airport for several years, and as a cook and bartender at several local establishments. He had a very open heart and was known for his beautiful smile, infectious humor, cooking abilities, and great compassion for others. He loved to bartend, socialize, and was the life of the party. He had a wonderful voice and loved to sing with his friend Mary Mahar. He was in the St. Paul’s choir for many years and sang with his family and friends regularly. His favorite song was “My Way” by Frank Sinatra, and he lived his life by those words. 

John was predeceased by his partner, John Komar; father, Frank Donahue; mother, Helen and stepfather Bob Wayman; brother, Robert Donahue; sister, Mary Mahar (Donahue); and special aunt, Marion Scott. He is survived by his brother, David Donahue and wife, Vicki; sister, Lori Donahue Schanzenbach and husband, Kirk; lifelong friend David Powers and Rick Smith; nieces and nephews: Jennifer Donahue, Jon Donahue, Nicole Relyea, Cortney and Danny Harageones, and Emily Ferber-Baer; great nieces Brianna and Azelyn; great nephews Connor, Eli, and Cameron; and many cousins and friends.  

His family wishes to extend their special thanks to the staff of Willow Point Nursing Home, Lourdes Hospice of Binghamton, and Mercy House for the loving care they gave to John during his long illness. We extend our eternal gratitude to Rhonda, the nurse manager at Willow Point Nursing Home. She took a special interest in John and made sure he had everything he needed during his stay.   

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 from 11am to 1pm with a service to follow at 1pm at the Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home Inc., 137 Robinson St. Binghamton, NY 13904.  Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
