With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of John Wesley Hillard on Monday, September 29th, age 90, while residing at Ideal Senior Living Center. A life truly well-lived, John was born in Plymouth, PA, to the late Frank and Margaret Haas Hillard. He carried fond memories of his youth with his large family, culminating in his graduation from Plymouth High School.
John's life took a beautiful turn when he married Jeanne Mileski, and together they welcomed their cherished daughter, Diana. In 1961, the family moved to Binghamton, making a home on Bigelow St on the East Side for over five decades.
Professionally, John worked as a skilled maintenance man and die-setter at Binghamton Plastics and Southern Tier Plastics. John was devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His presence was a constant, and his support unconditional. Whether it was cheering from the sidelines of a football, baseball or basketball game, dance recital, or school or theater performance, or just babysitting (a lot) for his grandchildren, he was always there, offering his wholehearted patience, guidance and love.
A man of deep faith, John was known for his kindness and generosity. He consistently supported numerous organizations and was a proud member of Fairview Methodist Church.
Beyond his family and faith, John had a true passion for sports. He was a walking encyclopedia with an astonishing recall of statistics and facts - a talent retained till the end. A die-hard fan of the Phillies and Eagles, he also cheered for the Mets and Yankees. His team spirit was only outmatched by how proud John was to be a Grandpa. If it wasn't sport themed, John would no doubt be wearing one of his dozens of Grandpa themed shirts or hats accumulated over the years. In his quiet time, John loved the challenge of puzzles and word searches, completing literally thousands in his lifetime.
John was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Jeanne, siblings: Catherine, Joanne, Henry, William, Peggy, Edward, and Gail. He leaves behind his daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Arthur O’Neil, of Binghamton. He was a doting grandfather to Elana O’Neil, Shane (KC) O’Neil, and Cody O’Neil, all of Binghamton, and Christy O’Neil of Bath, NY. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Quinn Jameson and Keely Ireland, and he was eagerly anticipating the arrival of another baby girl in March 2026.
The family would especially like to thank all the wonderful staff at Ideal for the loving care shown to “the Comeback Kid” of Tulip Court.
A Funeral Service will be offered at Fairview Methodist Church, Robinson Street, Binghamton, Monday, October 6 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00am to 10:30am.
