John C. Slocum, age 85, of Binghamton, N.Y. passed away at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, NY on Sunday, November 3, 2024.
John Was predeceased by his father, John in 1979; his mother Stephanie in 2007; his cousins Frank, Paul and Michael Odell. In 2023 he was predeceased by his cousin Douglas Beardsley.
John is survived by his sister Alice M. Slocum; cousins, Ellen (Odell) Beardsley of Johnson City, Margaret Zier, Ventura, CA, Lora Zier of Binghamton; Darren Beardsley and family of Endwell, Jason Beardsley of Austin, Texas, several other cousins, friends and neighbors.
John had been a life long member of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Binghamton.
John attended public schools in Binghamton, NY on the East Side graduating from North High School in 1957. He was a recipient of the Thomas J. Watson Memorial Scholarship established by IBM in 1957 to recognize and honor academic excellence of a high school student pursuing a bachelor's degree.
He used his scholarship to earn a BS in political science at Harpur College. After receiving a paid internship, he received a Masters Degree in Economics from Binghamton University.
John was a devoted son and caretaker for both of his parents. He remained in Binghamton, NY and was hired by CAE Singer Link and worked for the company for over 30 years as a systems analyst. Not having a business background, he took additional courses in business at BCC, followed by the completion of Masters Degree in computer science from Binghamton University in 1986. Singer Link encouraged employees to take courses and paid all of his college expenses.
The family would like to thank his personal physician, Dr. Domingo Jimenez, and his staff at UHS for the care he received these last 2 years. Until recently, John was going to several doctors and they were extremely helpful. We want to thank Dr. Jeffrey King, Dr. Darren Weinheimer, Rebecca Tillotson, PA, Dr. Hisham Kashou, Dr. Fatima Husain and Dr. Regina Frants.
Lastly, the family would like to thank all of the employees of GSFH for the last 8 months of John’s life. The physical therapy he was able to receive along with the medical assistance helped John to live independently.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10am on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at St. Paul’s Church in Binghamton. The family will receive friends from 9:30am until the time of the service. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions in John's memory to St. Paul’s Church, Mercy House of the Southern Tier or the American Heart Association.
