Joseph (Joe) Hoover Spisak of Binghamton, died at home on August 1, 2024. He was predeceased by his parents John and Mary (Sidor) Spisak, and his brother George (Deborah), sisters Helen (George) Arnold and Josephine (Robert) Barriger, and four infant siblings. He is survived by his daughters JoAnne Reynolds and Barbara Jean Blackman and his grandchildren Rachel Reynolds (Mark Martin) and Reid Blackman, stepdaughter Linda (John) Cichostepski, a stepson Roger Miller (Robert Phillips) and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe’s parents immigrated to the US from what is now Slovakia, and were so proud to become American citizens that they gave him the middle name Hoover when he was born on the night Herbert Hoover was elected President (11/7/1928).
Joe graduated from Binghamton Central High School, keeping the truant officer employed. He served in the US Army in combat during the Korean Conflict and was awarded numerous medals. He was a Lieutenant in the Endicott fire department for many years, retiring after being injured in the line of duty.
He was an avid automobile enthusiast and also had auto dealerships. He was a member of St Michael’s Greek Orthodox Church, as well as the American Legion Post 1700. He was known for his love of his family, and his entrepreneurial spirit. His dynamic presence will be greatly missed.
Friends may call at the Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home on Friday August 9 from 4-6pm. Joseph’s life will be celebrated with funeral services at St Michaels Greek Catholic Church on Saturday August 10 at 10am, followed by burial at St Michael’s Cemetery with Military Honors. Donations in Joe’s honor can be made to Fisher House or the Veterans Home on Pine Street in Binghamton.
