Obituary

Kate passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 1, 2023. Kate was born August 27, 1935 in Great Bend, Pennsylvania.  Kate is predeceased by her parents, John and Alice Gilroy; her son, Jimmy Joe; her sisters, Joan Carman and Betty Gilroy; and her great grandson, Menico Martino Yannuzzi.  

Kate is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 68 years, Jim. Her sons John (Vipacharee) Egan, Tom (Deb) Egan, and her daughter Colleen (Gene) Martino .  Her legacy includes 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren that she absolutely adored.  Jennifer (JP) Lewis, Richard Egan, Katie Warde, Haley Egan, Sean (Amber) Egan, Patrick (Viki) Egan, Erin (Gerry) Magrini, Kate Egan, Kimberly (Andrew) Verkey, Michael (Jamie) Martino, and Amylynne (Gio) Yannuzzi,  Kelsey Sullivan, Lochlan Lewis, Thomas and Logan Egan, Cason Sandoval, Johnny and Margot Magrini, Michael, Christian and Jace Martino, Gianna, Gabriella, and Martino Verkey, Adalia and Avianna Yannuzzi. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, sister in laws and brother in laws.  

Kate married the love of her life on September 17, 1954.  She lived her life dedicated to her catholic faith.  She worked at A&P, Rices Market, IBM, and was a caregiver for many local families.  She enjoyed her summers at Page Lake with her family and friends.  She was a loyal Syracuse, Giants, Yankees, and Binghamton University sports fan where Kate and Jim would attend every girls and boys basketball home game at Binghamton University.  She loved her weekly excursions to Tioga Downs with Jim meeting and greeting everyone she encountered.  Kate loved taking care of her grandchildren Kimberly, Michael, and Amy from infants to adulthood and they graciously returned that love by taking care of her especially these last few months and holding her while she passed.

The family would like to thank the doctors who cared for her especially Dr. Lui and Dr. Ram and to the ICU nurses at Lourdes hospital for their compassionate care.  

Calling hours will be Sunday from 3-5 at Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home, Inc., 137 Robinson St, Binghamton, NY and a Funeral Mass will be held on Monday at 10 am at St. Paul’s Church, 15 Doubleday Street, Binghamton, NY.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, any donations can be sent to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
